Come January when the weather gets rough, the kids can get going with an array of athletic activities sponsored by the Town's Department of Parks and Recreation. Following on are some of those athletic choices, all held at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center, 449 Pemberwick Road.
Tennis for Tots will begin classes on Mondays starting January 27 for six weeks ending March 10. There will be no class February 17. Registration will begin by mail only Monday, January 6 - January 10. The program for 3 and 4 years old program will run from 2:45 -3:15 p.m., or 3:15 - to 3:45 p.m. The 5, 6 and 7 year old program will be from 3:45 - 4:30 p.m., 4:30 - 5:15 p.m., or 5:15 to 6 p.m. The cost is $90 for the 3 & 4 year olds, and $100 for the 5 - 7 year olds. Tennis rackets will be provided. Pat Cianciulli who has been the director of the Town's Tennis Program for five years will teach the program. He also teaches at various private clubs in Greenwich, and has worked at the US Open. He has taken the latest workshops with the USPTR. Youth Basketball Clinics start on Thursdays, January 30 for six weeks ending March 13. There will be no class on February 13. Kindergarten and first grade programs will run from 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. Second and third graders will meet from 4:30 - 5:15 p.m., and fourth and fifth graders meet from 5:15 to 6 p.m. The fourth and fifth grade program is great training opportunity for players that are playing on travel, and house basketball teams. In person registration at the Civic Center begins on Monday, January 13. The cost for the program is $100. Coach John Czarnecki will teach this junior basketball class. Czarnecki is certified by the State of Connecticut, and has coached for over 25 years. He has coached for the Greenwich Basketball Association, Greenwich Flame travel team, Greenwich Boys and Girls Club, and the freshman, JV, and Varsity Basketball teams at GHS. Registration will begin by mail only Monday January 6 - Friday January 10.
Indoor Field Hockey Clinics start Sunday, January 26 and run for 5 weeks until March 2. There will be no class on February 16. There will be two sessions for kids 8 - 12 years of age. Session 1 will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for children 8 and 9 years old. Session 2 will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for children 10 - 12 years old. The program will help children develop skills in stick work, passing, receiving, shooting, basic offensive and defensive skills and small sided games. Registration for these Sunday Clinics will begin by mail only starting Monday, January 6 - Friday, January 10. In person registration will begin on Monday, January 13 at the Bendheim Western Civic Center until classes are full.
Indoor Soccer begins on Wednesdays starting January 22, and continues to March 12. There will be no class on February 12. The first class will be for children that are 4 and 5 years old. It will meet from 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. The second class will be for children that are 6 and 7 years old and will meet from 4:15 - 5 p.m.. The program will be taught by Soccer with Aldwin. The Soccer with Aldwin clinics are a unique training program that focuses on teaching the fundamentals of soccer in a fun environment. The players will practice kicking, passing, ball control, dribbling, shooting, agility and much more. For over 16 years Soccer with Aldwin has been running soccer training programs throughout Connecticut. Registration will begin on Monday January 6 - 10 by mail only. Walk in registration will begin on Monday, January 13 until classes are full.
